In 2011 the NASA Earth Science Division (ESD) announced a
competitive opportunity to fund work at NASA Centers regarding climate
assessment activities. This was in support of the 2013 National Climate
Assessment (NCA) and future assessments. Proposals were to be funded in
three areas:
- Enabling tools: NASA will support projects in order that data
production and modeling efforts can respond to and support the NCA Where
appropriate, NASA models will be run to support the assessment. NASA
tools can support creation of scenarios, and data sets (either directly
retrieved or assimilated) will be provided for the assessment.
Also of
interest are efforts to visualize scientific and other information for
purposes of the assessments, including analyses and communication of
findings.
-
Assessment Capabilities & Products: NASA will support projects
that provide direct contributions to assessment products in the Sectors,
Regions, and Cross-Cutting Topics. Projects will be expected to produce
and deliver assessment products on specific topics, with appropriate
coordination with NCA and other agencies. Projects should support
analyses of existing data sets and models and principal investigators
should expect to participate in the technical input, writing, and/or
development of relevant section(s) of the 2013 NCA. Proposed projects
may include specific visualization activities within their proposal to
support analysis and communication of results.
- 2013 NCA Sections: NASA will support contributions to NCA writing
teams for the sections on Human Responses to Climate Change, Scientific
Basis for Climate Change, and Future Scientific and Societal Needs.
In total, fourteen proposals were funded through 2014. The four enabling tools projects were renewed in 2014 and will be supported through 2017.
