 Sebastian Harkema

Dr. Sebastian Harkema received a Bachelor of Science in meteorology from Central Michigan University and Masters and PhD in atmospheric science from the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). His PhD was funded through the NASA Future Investigators in NASA Earth and Space Science and Technology (FINESST) program and focused on using NASA numerical prediction model output, NASA/NOAA satellite imagery, lightning data, as well as data collected from the NASA Investigation and Precipitation for Atlantic-Coast Threatening Snowstorms (IMPACTS) field campaign to better understand the microphysical and environmental processes that lead to electrification – and potentially lightning – within snowfall. Some of this research was highlighted in National Geographic. He is currently a Research Associate at UAH working closely with the NASA Short-term Prediction Research and Transition (SPoRT) at Marshall Space Flight Center and serves as the point-of-contact for the SPoRT Sea Surface Temperature product.
