Gridded NUCAPS: Analysis of Pre-Convective Environment

Posted on: 14 March 2017

Gridded NUCAPS is the NOAA-Unique Combined Atmospheric Processing System and it is the operational algorithm for processing satellite sounding retrievals from the JPSS series of satellites. Gridded NUCAPS is based on both infrared and microwave sounding retrievals from the CrIS and ATMS instruments. This training item introduces the application of gridded NUCAPS which transforms the Gridded NUCAPS vertical soundings into a horizontal, two-dimensional display for a given layer or pressure level or cross-section. The application example focus on the issue of analysis of the pre-convective environment for regions of instability and comparison to NWP forecasts.
