RESEARCH PRODUCT DETAILS

Visible
VIIRS Visible imagery is produced at a wavelength of 0.64 µm and is only available during the daytime hours. At a resolution of 375 m, the Visible channel can detect cloud features that cannot be resolved by GOES, thus providing forecasters better situational awareness.

Shortwave Infrared
The VIIRS shortwave infrared imagery uses the 3.7 µm wavelength and is capable of 375-m resolution. This imagery is particularly useful in detecting hot spots on the Earth's surface, such as from wild fires. Hot spots will appear as single white pixels.

Longwave Infrared
VIIRS Longwave Infrared imagery uses a wavelength of 11.5 µm and is capable of 375-m resolution. This assists with the recognition of convective versus stratiform cloud types, particularly at night.
